Hokitika

Just a short one on this place, since there is not much to say. I arrived well from Punakaiki, being picked up by Peter, a German chemist on Holidays in NZ. The arrival was a bit of a nightmare because the only Backpackers accommodation in the city center was fully booked, so I moved to another place 2km away from the center for one night. Birdsongs Backpackers is lovely, but pretty expensive and far away so I would recommend it as a back-up plan only. Best to stay at 'Mountain Jade Backpackers' which is pretty cheap and right in the down town.

Hokitika is a small town of 3400 people, 250km away on the west to Christchurch. Still on the West Coast, it is between the Tasman Sea and Hokitika river. The place is known for its beautiful beach and its 'Pounamo', which is the New-Zealand Green stone or jade. It is worth to have a walk in the down town and go inside the little Pounamu shops and artisans, they make very beautiful things. The place is also famous for the 'Hokitika Gorge', 33km away from the town. The water there is usually very unique, a beautiful deep turquoise that can't be seen everywhere. Unfortunately, the color of the water changes according to the weather, and I was not very lucky, I arrived there after 2 hours waiting to be picked up by a car, and the water did not have that beautiful color.
Lastly, there are 2 beautiful lakes around, for those who have a car: Lake Kaniere and Lake Mahinapua. I could not go there because there are still too far away, but that would be something to do.

Juste une petite note sur cet endroit, car il n'y a pas grand-chose à dire. Je suis arrivée de Punakaik, après avoir été emmenée par Peter, un chimiste allemand en vacances en NZ. L'arrivée relevait plutôt du cauchemar car la seul auberge Backpack en ville était complète, j'ai dû aller dans un autre Backpack à 2km du centre-ville, juste pour une nuit. Birdsongs Backpackers est un endroit charmant, mais assez cher et éloigné donc je ne le recommanderais qu'en 2nd choix. Le mieux est de rester à 'Moutain Jade Backpackers', moins cher et en plein milieu du centre (mais pas bruyant).

Hokitika est une petite ville de 3400 habitants, située à 250km à l'ouest de Christchurch, toujours sur la côte Ouest donc, entre la mer Tasman et la rivière Hokitika. L'endroit est connu pour sa très belle plage, et son 'Pounamu', qui est la pierre verte de NZ ou jade. Il est intéressant de se balader en ville et de rentrer dans les petits magasins artisanaux, il y a vraiment de très belles choses. L'endroit est aussi célèbre pour les 'Gorges de Hokitika', à 33km de la ville. L'eau y est vraiment unique, d'un bleu turquoise très profond qu'on voir assez rarement. Malheureusement, la couleur de l'eau change en fonction du temps et quand je suis arrivée (après 2 heures d'attente sur le bas de la route), l'eau n'était pas du tout turquoise et ne présentait rien de particulier.

Enfin, il y a aussi deux lacs à voir dans les environs: les lacs Kaniere et Mahinapua. Je n'y suis pas allée car je n'ai pas de voiture mais c'est aussi quelque chose à voir.

Punakaiki (Pancake rocks)

I still can't believe how lucky I have been to reach the place. The segment between Takaka and Punakaiki is pretty long, maybe 3 to 4 hours drive. But the WWOOFERs of the Guesthouse in Takaka wanted to go to Nelson with the van, to make shopping, so they dropped me in Richmond. There were already 4 hitch-hikers waiting for a car, but I was the first picked-up, within not even 10 minutes. The driver (Brecon) was a friendly funny (and besides also handsome) kiwi from Christchurch, he dropped me at the junction West Coast vs. Christchurch. I did not wait even 2 minutes, the first car took me to Punakaiki, it was driven by a funny French guy, Igor, who is travelling NZ after his working Holiday in Australia.

We arrived in Punakaiki in the late afternoon, went to watch the Pancake rocks and then had some cider. Igor left to Greymouth and I stayed in the Beach Hostel, which is a very expensive place, unfortunately the only Backpackers hostel. Punakaiki is not even a town, there are only hotels, an i-site and a tavern. That is it... So whoever is going there should bring its own food. But the place is incredibly beautiful, the vegetation especially is magical. It is located on the West Coast, between Westport and Greymouth. The Paparoa National Park is next door.

On the next day, I walked around and made a mistake. I wanted to walk the 10km track, but I turned wrong at the junction and ended up doing a bigger track, fortunately not the one of 24km, but is was a good 17km... On the way, I met almost nobody, I think I could not have been more lost in the middle of nowhere, but I came back safely to the hostel, broken and exhausted, but in one piece.

J'ai encore du mal à croire à quel point j'ai eu de la chance pour me rendre sur place. La route entre Takaka et Punakaiki est plutôt longue, il faut bien compter 3-4 heures de route. Mais les WWOOFERS de Takaka voulaient aller à Nelson pour du shopping avec le van de l'auberge, donc ils m'ont déposée à Richmond. Sur place, il y avaient déjà 4 auto-stoppeurs mais j'ai été emmenée la première, je n'ai même pas attendu 10 minutes. Le conducteur (Brecon) était un kiwi sympa et marrant (et accessoirement mignon) de Christchurch. il m'a déposée à l'intersection entre la côte Ouest et Christchurch. Puis je n'ai même pas attendu 2 minutes, la première voiture s'est arrêtée et ma amenée à Punakaiki. Elle était conduite par un Français sympa, Igor (qui n'est pas d'Hossegor), lequel était en visite en NZ après un PVT en Australie.

Nous sommes arrivés à Punakaiki en fin d'après-midi, avons été voir les Pancakes rocks (qui ressemblent à des pancakes empilés les uns sur les autres, d'où leur nom). Après un verre de cidre, Igor a continué vers Greymouth et je suis restée au Beach Hostel, qui est assez cher et pas extraordinaire, mais c'est le seul Backpacker Hostel sur place. Punakaiki n'est même pas une ville, c'est un endroit touristique où se sont implantés des hôtels, une taverne et un i-site. C'est tout... donc qui veut s'y rendre doit amener quelques provisions. Mais l'endroit est de toute beauté, la végétation surtout est assez incroyable. Punakaiki est situé sur la côte Ouest, à mi-chemin entre Westport et Greymouth. Le parc national Paparoa est juste à côté.

Le jour suivant, je me suis royalement plantée. Je voulais faire la rando de 10km, mais à une intersection, je me suis trompée et j'ai continué sur la grande boucle. Bon je n'ai pas fait la très grande boucle de 24km, mais j'ai quand même marché environ 17km. Je n'ai croisé presque personne sur le chemin, pas possible de faire plus isolée au milieu de nul part (bon d'accord j'exagère). Je suis bien rentrée à l'hostel, complètement épuisée mais rentrée.

Takaka - Golden Bay

After my stay in Motueka and Abel Tasman (to be posted later), I went to Takaka in the beautiful Golden Bay, where I stayed at Kiwiana backpackers, a lovely hippie Guesthouse which I recommend. 

Takaka is a small town with a bit more than 1200 people. Founded in 1854, Takaka is located on the top West of the South Island and belongs to the Tasman Region. Tourism plays a key role in this (very) hippie city, which is also incredibly sunny. There are many things to do in Takaka and around, one of the most popular thing is maybe the 'Te Waikoropupu Springs', better known as 'Pupu Springs', which belongs to the worl's purest and clearest fresh waters. The Pupu Springs have a special meaning in the Maori Culture.

Takaka is the main town of the Golden Bay region, which offers a few beautiful beaches, caves and reserves. It was great staying there, I met a lot of Americans and I was impressed by Bill, a 58 years old American mathematics teacher and world-traveller, who travels New-Zealand by bicycle. Impressive!

Après mon séjour à Motueka et dans le parc national d'Abel Tasman (dont le post viendra plus tard), je suis partie à Takaka dans la Golden Bay, où je suis restée dans l'auberge 'Kiwiana Backpackers', une petite auberge hippie que je recommande. 

Takaka est un village qui compte à peine plus de 1200 habitants. Fondé en 1854, Takaka est situé à l'extrême Nord-Ouest de l'île du Sud et fait partie de la région de Tasman. Le tourisme joue un rôle déterminant dans cette ville (vraiment très) hippie, laquelle est aussi incroyablement ensoleillée. Il y a pas mal de choses à voir à Takaka et dans ses environs, l'une des attractions principales étant la source 'Te Waikoropupu Springs', plus communément appelé 'Pupu Springs'. Son eau est l'une des plus pures et fraîches au monde, et elle revêt une signification particulière dans la culture Maori.

Takaka est la plus grande 'ville' de la Golden Bay, laquelle offre de très belles plages, grottes et diverses réserves. J'ai adoré y passer un peu de temps et j'ai été très impressionnée par Bill, un américain de 58 ans, prof de maths et globe-trotteur, qui parcourt la Nouvelle-Zélande à vélo. Impressionnant !
